Coronation Street’s George Shuttleworth’s future on cobbles ‘unveiled’ after arrest

Things aren’t looking promising for George Shuttleworth on Coronation Street following the de.ath of Theo Silverton – but is actor Tony Maudsley departing the cobbles?

Tony joined the ITV soap in 2020 as George, the son of the late funeral director Archie (Roy Hudd). Since then, he’s become a viewer favourite and featured in numerous major storylines.

Particularly at present, as last week, villainous Theo (James Cartwright) di.ed, triggering a significant whodunnit on the programme. Viewers will remember that Theo tormented Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) for months until his twisted offences were eventually revealed.

With multiple residents seeking revenge against him, Theo met his end, and his body was found by Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin). And in Tuesday’s episode (May 5), Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) told Todd that Theo had been murdered and an inquiry would be launched.

However, after George’s partner Chrissie (Amy Robbins) found George’s jumper stained with injury, she was left dreading the worst: that George had harmed Theo. When she consoled him about this, Lisa appeared once more and, upon spotting the jumper, detained George and escorted him to the station for interrogation, reports the Liverpool Echo.

George clarified that the injury on his jumper was due to an earlier confrontation in the flat between George, Todd, and Theo. Unfortunately for George, Lisa wasn’t convinced by his account and highlighted its contradictions, leaving him alarmed.

Following the recent plot twist in the soap, fans were quick to react with one viewer posting on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page: “It’s not looking good for George!” Another chimed in: “Poor George.” A third commented: “More twists and turns to come, I think.”

While some may worry that George’s Corrie arrest could signal actor Tony’s exit from the soap, it seems unlikely, as he inked a new contract earlier this year. In March, Tony took to social media, pictured raising a glass of bubbly as he confirmed his tenure on the cobbles had been extended for another year.

“New contract? Cheers, Corrie, don’t mind if I do. (I bit their hand off!) Can’t wait to see what’s around the corner for George (aside from more bodies),” he penned.

Fans were swift to respond. One person exclaimed: “Yay! So happy for you, Tony. And for us!” Another added, “You play one of the best characters on the cobbles for sure!”

A third joined in: “This is brilliant news and well deserved. Congratulations, Tony, looking forward to seeing more of George and Todd this year,
