CBS Y&R Recap Tuesday, May 5: Matt Wakes Up With Amnesia as Phyllis Is Arrested
Genoa City is facing a dangerous new storm as buried secrets begin forcing their way back into the open on The Young and the Restless. Tuesday’s episode delivers legal fallout, fractured loyalties, emotional confessions, and one chilling twist that could change everything: Matt Clark is alive, injured, and suffering from amnesia.
Phyllis Faces A Public Arrest
Phyllis Summers’ day takes a dramatic turn when Christine Blair Romalotti arrives at Summers Conglomerate with an officer and makes things official. Phyllis is read her rights and arrested, turning what could have been a quiet legal matter into a humiliating public spectacle.
Phyllis, never one to go down quietly, lashes out at Christine and insists the case will collapse once the evidence is exposed as unreliable. Even while being taken away, she refuses to surrender control of the narrative.
Lauren Fenmore Baldwin arrives just in time to witness the arrest and immediately promises to call Michael Baldwin. But Phyllis is not convinced Michael will help, revealing just how isolated and betrayed she feels.
Michael Makes A Risky Choice
Lauren later tracks Michael down at Crimson Lights and urges him to represent Phyllis. The request places Michael in a difficult position, especially because Victor Newman has strong feelings about the case.
Eventually, Michael visits the Newman ranch and tells Victor the truth: he has agreed to defend Phyllis.
Victor sees the decision as a personal betrayal. To him, loyalty is everything, and Michael’s professional duty feels like a direct attack on their relationship. Furious, Victor orders Michael out, making it clear this choice will come with consequences.
Michael does manage to get Phyllis released on bail, but the danger is far from over. With Christine determined and Phyllis’ history with her adding emotional weight to the case, this legal battle could quickly become deeply personal.

Nick Confesses His Private Struggle
At Society, Nick Newman opens up to Nikki Newman about the darkness he has been carrying. He explains that Sienna Bacall believes she may have killed Matt Clark in the desert, but Nick cannot accept that nightmare as over without proof.
Nick also admits that after running out of pain medication, he began misusing stronger pain relief, a struggle Adam noticed while they were in Vegas.
The confession leaves Nikki shaken. Nick reveals that Matt had given him a tainted batch, making it clear just how close he came to disaster.
Still, there is hope. Nick tells Nikki that Sharon recommended a treatment program, and he is committed to getting help. It is a quiet but powerful moment, showing Nick finally choosing honesty instead of denial.
Nikki And Victor Remain At A Standstill
Even while dealing with his own crisis, Nick tries to repair the damage between Nikki and Victor. But Nikki insists their marriage may be beyond his ability to fix.
Later, at the ranch, Nick attempts to get his parents to talk. Neither Victor nor Nikki is willing to make the first move. Their silence says everything. After surviving so many storms together, they now stand emotionally divided, with Nick trapped in the middle.
Sienna Relives A Terrifying Memory
At the cottage, Noah Newman tells Sharon that Sienna has remembered more about the night Matt disappeared. Her flashback takes her back to the desert, where she recalls running from Matt before he caught up with her.
Sienna remembers grabbing a rock and striking Matt during a desperate struggle for survival, then checking for a pulse and believing he was gone.
Sharon, however, is not fully convinced. Without a body, they cannot assume Matt is dead. She asks whether Sienna can remember the location so Victor’s security team can search the area.
Sienna struggles at first, then recalls seeing what looked like a water park nearby. It is a small clue, but in Genoa City, small clues often unlock massive secrets.
Matt Clark Is Alive
The episode’s most chilling twist comes when viewers learn Matt is not dead at all.
Matt is shown injured at a diner, confused and unable to remember who he is.
He empties his pockets and discovers a Genoa City Athletic Club key card. When he asks the waitress how far away the club is, she makes it clear he is nowhere near Wisconsin.
That key card becomes a terrifying breadcrumb leading him back toward Genoa City.
Matt then mutters that he needs to figure out what happened — and who he is. His amnesia may make him appear
vulnerable, but it also makes him dangerously unpredictable.
Genoa City Faces A New Threat
Tuesday’s episode leaves every major storyline on unstable ground. Phyllis is free on bail, but her legal war is just beginning. Michael has risked Victor’s trust. Nick is finally seeking help but remains haunted by Matt’s shadow. Nikki and Victor’s marriage remains fractured.
And Sienna’s worst fear has come true.
Matt Clark survived.
Now the question is whether he will return as a lost man searching for answers — or as an even greater threat to everyone who thought the nightmare was finally over.
