Coronation Street’s newest romance begins as Idris kisses Leanne

Love could finally be back on the cards for Leanne Battersby as Coronation Street prepares to launch a brand-new romance storyline that promises chemistry, conflict and plenty of drama.

The ITV soap has officially unveiled viewers’ first glimpse at Leanne’s growing connection with newcomer Idris Nazir — and judging by early scenes, sparks fly almost immediately.

Show bosses recently confirmed actor Junade Khan has joined the cast as Idris, the cousin of established Weatherfield resident Alya Nazir. But while Idris may arrive with charm and confidence, producers have already hinted there’s much more beneath the surface.

And for Leanne, the timing couldn’t be more significant.

Leanne Battersby Finally Gets A Fresh Start

After months of emotional fallout, betrayal and resentment surrounding Toyah and Nick, Leanne has struggled to move forward in Weatherfield.

“The connection is instant,” Junade explained.

“He likes Leanne because she’s real. He’s used to flashy people, but when he sees Leanne fending off a group of guys who aren’t paying their bill, he sees a strength in her that he admires.”

The actor also revealed that Idris’ admiration for Leanne runs deeper than simple attraction.

“It reminds him of his own mother, who raised him as a single parent,” he added. “He sees a strength in Leanne that he probably wishes he’d had in his own life.”

The emotional layer behind Idris’ interest suggests this romance could become far more meaningful than a short-lived fling.

Junade Khan also spoke warmly about working alongside Jane Danson, who has played Leanne Battersby for decades.

According to the actor, Jane immediately made him feel welcome behind the scenes.

“Working with Jane Danson has been amazing,” he shared. “Even on her day off, she came in to meet me. She’s really made this experience special.”

The praise reflects the strong collaborative atmosphere often praised by new arrivals to the long-running ITV soap.

“He can charm the birds from the trees,” she continued. “But he’s not soft and he’s certainly no pushover.”

The producer also hinted that Idris will clash with several alpha personalities in Weatherfield soon after arriving, setting the stage for future conflict beyond his romance storyline.

Leanne’s Romance Could Change Everything

For Leanne, Idris’ arrival appears to represent something she’s desperately needed for a long time — excitement.

Kate Brooks explained that the romance gives Leanne “a new lease of life” after months spent harbouring resentment toward Nick and Toyah.

“She’s been harbouring a deep-rooted resentment towards Toyah and Nick, because that’s the life she had,” Brooks said.

“But then this guy comes along — he’s got it all and he makes her laugh.”

According to Brooks, Idris brings energy, humour and unpredictability back into Leanne’s world.
