EastEnders: Gray faces a mysterious new challenge from prison

Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) remains one of the most notorious characters in EastEnders history, and although viewers once believed his time in Albert Square was finally finished, recent developments have proved otherwise.

The former solicitor is currently serving a life sentence for his actions, but prison has apparently done little to prevent Gray from attempting to influence the people he left behind.

With Sheila Atkins now becoming increasingly involved in the lives of Chelsea Fox and Jordan, Gray has found a potentially powerful connection to Walford—and upcoming scenes suggest he is preparing to put another concerning plan into motion.

Gray Atkins’ History In Albert Square

Gray originally arrived in Walford alongside his wife, Chantelle Atkins (Jessica Plummer), presenting himself to those around him as a successful professional and devoted family man.

Behind closed doors, however, their marriage told a very different story.

Gray’s relationship with Chantelle was controlling and harmful, leaving her increasingly desperate to leave.

Her attempt to leave was followed by a serious incident at their home that led to her death. Gray subsequently concealed the true circumstances surrounding what happened and initially managed to convince others that her death had been accidental.

For a time, his carefully constructed public image remained intact.

Tina Carter Learned More About What Happened

Gray’s position became increasingly precarious when Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White) began to realize that there was much more to Chantelle’s death than he had admitted.

Tina confronted him with her suspicions, but the situation had serious consequences.

Gray then concealed his involvement and created the impression that Tina had simply left Walford, allowing questions about her disappearance to continue while he avoided immediate suspicion.

The pair eventually married while preparing to welcome their child, but Chelsea soon began recognizing deeply troubling patterns in her husband’s behavior.

Gray gradually attempted to exert greater control over her, placing Chelsea in an increasingly difficult situation.

With help from Whitney, however, Chelsea eventually played a crucial role in exposing him.

Gray’s crimes finally caught up with him, leading to his arrest and eventual life sentence.

Sheila Atkins Becomes Gray’s Connection To Walford

Although Gray remains behind bars, Sheila Atkins (Sheila Ruskin) has emerged as his connection to the outside world.

Sheila has been attempting to provide financial support for Gray and Chelsea’s son Jordan, whose life recently changed dramatically following a serious road accident.

Jordan’s circumstances have gradually resulted in Sheila becoming more involved with Chelsea and the wider Fox-Trueman family.

In effect, Sheila has become his eyes and ears outside prison.

Gray Begins Developing A Mysterious New Scheme

Upcoming episodes return viewers to Gray’s life behind bars.

Following a major disturbance involving other prisoners, something apparently gives Gray an idea.

The imprisoned former solicitor begins developing a mysterious new plan—and given his history of manipulation, the development is unlikely to bring good news for Chelsea or anyone connected to Jordan.

The biggest concern is that Gray doesn’t necessarily need to leave prison to cause problems.

With Sheila able to interact directly with Chelsea and Jordan, he potentially has someone capable of influencing events in Albert Square on his behalf.

Is Chelsea In Gray’s Sights Again?

Chelsea fought hard to escape Gray’s control and helped ensure that he was finally held accountable for his actions.

Now, however, circumstances surrounding Jordan have inadvertently reopened a connection between them.
