Emmerdale’s Danny Miller reveals co-star inspiration behind sobriety decision

Emmerdale star Danny Miller has revealed that it was co-star Isabel Hodgins who inspired his journey to sobriety, highlighting the close bonds formed on set and the personal challenges actors often face behind the scenes.

Danny Miller’s Road To Sobriety

Danny Miller, renowned for his portrayal of Aaron Dingle on the ITV soap Emmerdale, has been candid about his personal transformation over the past year. Known for his intense storylines and high-energy performances, the Stockport actor shared with fans earlier this year his remarkable fitness journey, posting a striking “before and after” image documenting his physical transformation.

In an Instagram post accompanying his photoshoot reveal, Danny detailed how he had exchanged late nights and extra drinks for early mornings, describing a newfound clarity and steadiness in both body and mind.

Towards the end of May, Danny marked an important personal milestone—one full year of sobriety. He described the day as “emotional” and used the moment to encourage his followers, explaining that if he could make these life changes, they could too. He also paid tribute to his wife, Steph, acknowledging her unwavering support throughout his journey.

Isabel Hodgins: The Inspiration Behind Sobriety

In a heartfelt discussion on the podcast You Don’t Know You’re Born!—which he co-hosts alongside Wingman (Nigel Clucas)—Danny revealed that Isabel Hodgins, who portrays Victoria Sugden on Emmerdale, played a pivotal role in helping him begin his no-drinking journey.

Danny recalled the exact moment he turned to Isabel for guidance:

“Isabel was actually the inspiration… I’m going to say this quickly or I’ll cry! Isabel was the inspiration behind me [going sober] and I can remember, to the day, when it was. It was a Friday, and I remember this because the last day I had a drink was a Thursday night, when I thought everything was going to be over for me, and on the Friday morning, I was with Isabel and I asked her, ‘How do I stop drinking?’ And she was amazing with me. She was the inspiration behind it.”

Milestones and Tokens of Motivation

As part of her support, Isabel gifted Danny both a six-month and a one-year sobriety chip—physical tokens traditionally used in 12-step programs to acknowledge recovery milestones. These tokens serve as tangible reminders of progress and personal strength.

Danny reflected on the significance of Isabel’s gesture:

“She brought in her very own year token to say well done to me, and she was the inspiration behind it and a massive reason I’m still not drinking today.”

He added a personal message of gratitude to his co-star:

“That’s why you’ll always be one of my best friends in the world, and I’ll always be thankful.”

Isabel responded with warmth and pride:

“I’m glad I could help because the person you are now, I could not be more proud. So well done you!”

The heartfelt exchange was later shared on the podcast’s Instagram page, where Isabel commented again, writing: “So so proud.” Fellow Emmerdale star Eden Taylor-Draper, who plays Belle Dingle, also expressed her support, adding a simple heart emoji.

Life Behind The Scenes On Emmerdale

Danny Miller’s revelations shine a light on the personal challenges many actors face while portraying emotionally demanding roles. Playing Aaron Dingle—a character involved in some of the most dramatic and traumatic storylines in the village—Danny has often had to balance intense on-screen narratives with his own personal life.

The support system provided by co-stars like Isabel Hodgins illustrates how the Emmerdale cast forms a tight-knit community, relying on each other not just professionally but personally, especially when confronting life-changing decisions such as pursuing sobriety.

The Importance of Mental Health and Support

Danny’s candid discussion emphasizes the vital role of support networks in achieving sobriety. By seeking guidance from Isabel and relying on her encouragement, Danny demonstrates that reaching out for help, even from colleagues, can be a transformative step in overcoming addiction.

Sobriety milestones like the six-month and one-year chips serve not only as recognition of personal achievement but also as symbols of resilience and motivation, highlighting the emotional and psychological aspects of recovery.

Looking Ahead: Danny Miller’s Continued Journey

With a year of sobriety now behind him, Danny continues to inspire both fans and peers. He openly encourages others struggling with alcohol to pursue a healthier lifestyle and seek the guidance they need.

The ongoing support from family, co-stars, and close friends remains crucial, showing that recovery is rarely a solitary process. Danny’s story underscores the importance of community, accountability, and mentorship.
