Emmerdale’s Lisa Riley left ‘crying to the point of no return’ as she says ‘I have no regrets’
Emotional Reaction to an Extraordinary Honour
Emmerdale fans have been left moved after hearing that Lisa Riley, the beloved actress behind Mandy Dingle, was awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours. The 49-year-old revealed that the moment she discovered the accolade was deeply emotional, bringing her to tears as she thought of her late mother, Cath.
“There’s endless sadness and tears that my mum isn’t here to see this,” Lisa explained. “She’d have been so thrilled and so proud. More than you can imagine. She always said, ‘My little girl, she did it!’ And I have. You don’t get bigger than this.”
Cath Riley had been instrumental in shaping Lisa’s early life, enrolling her in ballet at age four and fostering a sense of individuality and confidence. She also championed Lisa’s acting aspirations until her death from breast cancer in 2012. Lisa imagines her mother celebrating from above: “I said to my dad, ‘Mum is up there now, literally having the biggest whisky and Diet Coke. I can just visualise her and hear her saying, ‘Yeah, I couldn’t let her have her 50th in July without a gift from me.’”
Recognition for a Stellar Career
Lisa’s MBE acknowledges her decades-long contributions to television drama and her tireless charitable work. The announcement came just weeks before her milestone 50th birthday. She recalled the moment she opened the official letter: “We got back from a city break and there was loads of mail, including a very posh envelope which said ‘From The King.’ I thought someone was pranking me. I opened it up and I burst out crying to the point of no return.”
The honour recognises not only her work on Emmerdale but also her broader impact on drama and her charitable endeavours, including advocacy for Breast Cancer Now, Maggie’s Yorkshire, Sue Ryder, and Sane. Lisa is scheduled to receive the award later this year at either Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, jokingly admitting she secretly hopes to meet Prince William.
She also received a handwritten card from Queen Camilla, praising her work in television and charity. “I couldn’t believe it. A letter from the Queen! I’m a massive royalist, as was my mum. I’ve always loved and respected them,” Lisa said, reflecting on a lifelong admiration for the Royal Family.
From Mandy Dingle to National Recognition
Lisa’s career began with her iconic role as Mandy Dingle in 1995, aged 19. Initially intended as a short-term part, Mandy quickly became a fan favourite, leading to a permanent role. She won the National Television Award for Most Popular Newcomer and later became the host of You’ve Been Framed!, raising viewership to over 13 million.
After leaving Emmerdale in 2001, Lisa starred in numerous dramas including Fat Friends and the BAFTA-winning Three Girls. She also competed in Strictly Come Dancing before returning to the Dales in 2019. Lisa reflects on her current role: “I feel like the elder stateswoman these days. I genuinely look out for the young ones. They come to me for advice because I have walked the walk and talked the talk.”
Last year, Lisa captivated audiences once more during her appearance on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, which led to her becoming a panellist on ITV’s Loose Women. “I’m loving being back with the girls on Loose Women. It’s absolutely superb – one thing I can say I’m good at is talking,” she says.
Looking Ahead: Birthday and Emmerdale Storylines

Lisa is preparing for her 50th birthday with a holiday alongside her fiancé Al Benković. The couple have been together for 12 years and have chosen not to marry, describing themselves as “husband and wife in every way, shape, and form” without the formalities. Unlike her previous milestone celebrations, Lisa’s upcoming birthday will be alcohol-free, a shift she embraces: “When I think of my 30th and how many bottles of Jägermeister we went through! Now it’s going to be how many bottles of Evian.”
Fans can also expect more drama in the Dales as Lisa’s character, Mandy, interacts with the newly returned Kevin Townsend (Chris Coghill). With Kevin’s son Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches) now in a relationship with Mandy’s son Vinny (Bradley Johnson), Mandy’s protective instincts will be on full display. Lisa teases, “She’s a smother mother with her son Vinny and she thinks Kev might not be the person he says he is. She’s elated that Vinny and Lewis are together… but she sees a few hurdles in the road as far as Kev is concerned – she can spot a rogue at 50 metres.”
A Legacy of Impact
Lisa hopes to continue her journey on Emmerdale for years to come, sharing, “I’m fully signed. I can see myself in the show in my seventies if they’ll have me. But I never feel I’m safe. It just takes one storyline or a new producer to come in and say, ‘We don’t like the Dingles. Bye, bye.’”
Despite the uncertainties, she expresses a deep affection for her character: “I genuinely love Mandy Dingle. She’s like my friend that I take to work every day. Sometimes the storylines are serious, but you can still raise a glass of fun for comedy by throwing a bit of Mandy in – that campery and daftness.”
Lisa also hints at exciting new developments: “There’s a huge event coming up, with one of the big shocks of the year. There’s a scene that’s nine pages – I’ve got one line, but it steals the scene. It’s hilarious!”
