“Yellowstone”’s Kelly Reilly Reacts to Monica’s Death in “Marshals”, Calls It a ‘Missed Opportunity’ in “Dutton Ranch” Season 1
Fans of the Yellowstone universe have long wondered how the sprawling narratives of its spinoffs intertwine. Now, Kelly Reilly is offering some clarity on one of the biggest lingering questions: how Beth and Rip fit into the broader timeline alongside Kayce Dutton’s journey in Marshals.
In Paramount+’s Dutton Ranch, Reilly reprises her iconic role as Beth Dutton alongside Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler, while Luke Grimes continues the story of Kayce Dutton on CBS’s Marshals. Though the premiere of Marshals revealed that Kayce’s wife Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille, passed away after a cancer diagnosis, the timing and context of her death raised questions among viewers.
Speaking to TV Insider, Reilly explained, “I think that happened before our show started in a story world. I imagine Beth and Rip had gone to Monica’s [funeral]. There has been some connection, and our story started after that.” She clarified that while Monica’s passing wasn’t depicted on-screen in either series, the events were meant to influence the characters’ journeys indirectly.
Reilly also hinted at potential crossovers in the future, noting that Beth and Rip are likely checking in on Kayce even if it hasn’t been shown yet. “I would absolutely imagine that there’ll be some checking in on her brother, and we just didn’t see it this year,” she said. “I think it’s something that was a missed opportunity, quite honestly. But we’re both trying to start up these big shows, and we can see where there are gaps, and we see where things need to be fixed.”
The tragedy of Monica’s death serves a narrative purpose beyond personal grief. Creator Spencer Hudnut explained that it was designed to shake up Kayce’s life and force him into his new role as a U.S. Marshal. He added that the storyline also shines a light on real-world issues affecting Native reservations: “She passes because of cancer. Reservations have a high rate of cancer because of all the toxins that have been dumped on them. We wanted to make her death about a bigger issue… We wanted to be very respectful of that character.”
With both Dutton Ranch and Marshals renewed for second seasons, Reilly teased that Beth and Rip’s connection with Kayce will be explored more directly. “That’s what you get the opportunity to do in a season 2,” she said. “You get to go back and do this one differently. We can make this better. We can take care of that.”
Cole Hauser is equally enthusiastic about the potential for crossovers. Speaking to the outlet, he expressed his desire to work alongside Grimes again: “I just love him, man. I miss him. It’d be fun to see actually Kayce and Rip get along, have a scene where they’re happy together.” Hauser emphasized that while the shows are running separately, there’s room in the narrative for a reunion or a visit to Montana, opening doors for storytelling possibilities that honor the shared universe.

Reilly echoed these sentiments, noting the emotional connection forged over six years on Yellowstone. “We were a family and we miss them very much. So the more we can get back in, that’s what we’re fighting for, Cole and I. Where we get our wishes, we would love to have as many back in our world.”
Fans of the franchise can take heart: the threads connecting Beth, Rip, and Kayce are far from severed. With the narrative paths of Dutton Ranch and Marshals continuing to develop, future seasons may finally bring the characters together in a way that delivers both emotional resonance and dramatic impact.
The Yellowstone universe continues to expand, and with Reilly and Hauser advocating for meaningful connections between the shows, viewers can expect that the stories of the Dutton family—and the emotional weight of their bonds—will remain at the heart of the franchise.
